Pathetic Winners

And now on to important news…the NFL, Don Shula, and New England Patriots:

Don Shula likes the Patriots’ chances of going undefeated, but the Bill Belichick-inspired spying scandal has clouded Shula’s thinking when comparing New England with his unbeaten 1972 Dolphins team.

“The Spygate thing has diminished what they’ve accomplished,” Shula said in an interview with the New York Daily News. “You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They’ve got it.”

Of course the reason Don Shula’s quote is a big deal is because he coached the only undefeated team in the NFL back in 1974. I used to like the Dolphins, but now I just find them to be a bunch of pathetic losers. Every season the remaining members of the ‘74 team celebrate when there are no more undefeated teams in the NFL. In fact I would bet they have the champaign chilling right now just waiting for someone to knock off the Patriots. I am not a Patriots fan, but they just became my new favorite team for the rest of the season IF they can go undefeated. Go Pats! Beat the Dolphins!

Let me say this directly to the ‘74 Dolphins: if it takes some else losing for your record to mean something, then maybe it didn’t mean anything in the first place. God forbid your accomplishments be viewed on their own merits and not based on the failures of someone else.

I am a long time Jets fan who, in this case (I hate to say it), must defend the Patriots against Shula…(arghhhh, this hurts!) Shula’s record as a coach is not exactly clean, just protected by the power he had in the NFL when he coached. Shall we all go back to before the 1982 AFC championship game when coach Shula failed to protect his field from torrential rains in Miami that made the unprotected field a muddy mess? NFL rules called for the home team to protect the field but Shula ignored it. It was not done. The Jets better offense was stymied and the Jets lost. The Jets coach, Michaels, quit when the NFL simply ignored his protest.
